Desperately Seeking a Score

Elliott Carter's String Quartet No. 5.

The Oakland Public Library doesn't have a copy, though they had the first and second quartets.

The San Francisco Public Library supposedly has a copy, but it's not on the shelves and the card catalog does not say it's been checked out.

The Berkeley Public Library doesn't have a copy.

UC Berkeley's Music Library has a copy, but I don't have a library card for the UC system.

I should have gotten a copy via interlibrary loan a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't. If you have a copy, I'd pay for FedEx to get it here by Wednesday, Jan. 9. Email me or post a comment here if you have a copy handy.

Just use UC Berkeley's copy. You don't need a library card to use the library. Just walk in, find the score (and parts!) in the stacks, xerox them on the public machine, and walk out. You won't even have to talk to anyone.

Unfortunately, at the moment the UCB Music Library is on intersession hours, 1-5 M-F, when I'm typically at work a couple of counties away. It is faintly possible I'll be able to get there this week.

rootlesscosmo, THANK YOU!

Aargh, but 3 to 5 days to get it here.

You're welcome--I was afraid the shipping delay might be a problem. I just checked Everynote

http://www.everynote.com/

but they haven't caught up to Carter yet, though they're a useful source and presumably still expanding their catalog. Good hunting.

Lisa -- Sheet Music Plus is actually located in Emeryville. I have been told you can phone them to arrange to pick up an order at their facility, but have never tried that myself. I live in Oakland and have received shipped items from them in just 1 or 2 days because they are so close.

Oooooh, thank you! I will give them a call.

If SheetMusicPlus doesn't pan out, the S.F. Conservatory Library has it.

I'd get it for you, but I'm still trying to get them to respond to my request for an Alumni ID. Maybe you know someone else with that connection.

SheetMusicPlus hasn't got it in stock, so I went to the UCB Music Library. Thanks, all, for your suggestions. Next time, I will just deal with this a lot sooner.

rootlesscosmo, Eliot Carter won't appear on the public-domain everynote.com for a very long time. His works won't be in the public domain in the U.S. until 90 years after his death, which hasn't occurred yet.

I know this is very late, but the San Francisco Public Library copy is on the shelf. You can call the Art, Music and Recreation Center at (415) 557-4525 to have staff look on the shelf for the score for you.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. The concert I needed it for was last month. :) I looked for the score at the SF Main Library, and at that time it was not on the shelves. I found it at the UC Berkeley Music Library - and now I have a UC library card, too.
