Martyrdom Season

Martyrdom isn't as hard a sell as Joshua Kosman might have it:
  • Khovanshchina
  • Dialogues of the Carmelites
  • Le Martyr de St. Sebastien / [Suor Angelica? you tell me. In theory, it's possible to do the whole five-hour pagent of St. Sebastien, in practice, nobody would come the audience would consist of me and Patrick.]
  • The Maid of Orleans
  • Giovanna d'Arco
  • Jeanne d'Arc au Bucher
Okay, I got carried away: I was going to list three operas, but...okay, it's a little heavy on Joan of Arc. Suggested additions?

Excellent!

I also realized after posting that Ida Rubinstein commissioned St. Seb and Jeanne d'Arc au Bucher.

Rigoletto? Gilda basically martyrs herself to save that nitwit who raped her.

Tosca? Cavaradossi basically martyrs himself to save that nitwit soprano.

Or does there have to be a religious component?
