But my point is that there's no conceivably useful sense of the term "German opera" that includes either of those pieces.

There's no difference stylistically between Handel and, say, Porpora, or between Mozart and Salieri; their respective cradle tongues don't matter one whit. If you don't classify Figaro and Partenope as Italian operas then there's not much point in doing national classifications at all.Joshua Kosmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14344510388923390436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8957911.post-89318717738057855192014-03-01T12:11:22.770-08:002014-03-01T12:11:22.770-08:00Written by German-speaking composers, Joshua.Written by German-speaking composers, Joshua.Lisa Hirschhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14014924958428072675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8957911.post-26924496303866342002014-03-01T11:54:20.460-08:002014-03-01T11:54:20.460-08:00Psst — don't look now but neither Figaro nor P...Psst — don't look now but neither Figaro nor Partenope is a German opera.Joshua Kosmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14344510388923390436noreply@blogger.com
