James Fallows on the Current Idiocy

Read James Fallows on what one can only hope will be the last chapter of the utterly baseless claims that Barack Obama isn't a U.S. citizen.

  1. Hope, but not expect. People believe what they want to believe, subject to revision in accordance with actual data only when they discover they'd rather believe something else. We were in Vietnam because if we didn't fight them there, the Vietcong would come swarming up the beaches in San Diego, right up until being in Vietnam came to seem expensive and meaningless, at which point the danger to San Diego vanished. Yeah, I'm a cynical old bastard.

  2. Fallows himself believes that the numbers of the deluded won't change. Completely depressing.

    ******

The other day Trump even implied that Obama wasn't a good student and didn't deserve to attend Columbia and Harvard.

What I find even more depressing is how all of this crap has pushed him to the top of the Republican polls.

    H.L. Mencken is still right:

"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public"

  4. It's a bump. When push comes to shove, the Republicans aren't nominating Trump.

  5. The Viets did come swarming up to the beaches. They're now all running restaurants and beauty salons in Orange County.
