I've seen it before - is it Eliott Carter? I believe it's a canonic tribute to another composer (is it Stravinsky?) on either a significant anniversary or his death.
I was going to guess Stravinsky himself--the third movement of the Septet (which I've played--a good piece) is a (very strict) fugue with a subject not unlike this one, though quicker.

ReplyDeleteThat is exactly right - it's a three-part canon, playable by instruments in C or Bb, written on the death of Stravinsky.

ReplyDeleteMaybe Carter stole the theme from Stravinsky!
ReplyDelete"That ain't stealing, that's hommage."
