But Seriously....

....since the election of John Paul II in 1978, the College of Cardinals has been packed with conservatives. Don't expect any surprises in the upcoming election, like a comparatively liberal Pope who might support American nuns rather than trying to suppress them on fake doctrinal grounds, or who might seriously pursue those within the Church, like Roger Mahony and Bernard Law, who protected child abusers instead of sending them to jail in disgrace.

  1. The Mahony scandal has been getting big play in the media here, as it should. Two things stick out for me:

    1) The sheer arrogance of Mahony and his minions, their correspondence just reeks of a "bah, don't worry about the secular authorities, they're chumps" attitude

    2) how utterly feeble they really are, they think a few prayers and a high mass here and there "for the victims" will make the whole nightmare go away.

There's a great speech in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, given by Big Daddy, about "mendacity". That word sums it up for me.

  2. Yep, yep, yep. I live for the day when Mahony and Law (Mahony's counterpart in Boston) go to jail for their part in the cover-ups. And I'm not even Catholic!

  3. I think we should thank Benedict for doing more than his share on the task of diminishing the moral authority of religions everywhere.
