White Smoke Rises...

....over the Vatican, but they're busy running marching bands around St. Peter's Square, so we don't know who it is yet.

  1. It's the Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He's 76, so we'll be going through the smoke watching again soon. They didn't dare elect an American, but they picked someone from a place where Catholicism isn't on the decline.

He'll be Pope Francis, I should give Messiaen's opera a spin over the weekend!

  2. Yeah - I caught that at lunch. He is from the same mold as Cardinal Rat, and yes, we will be going through this again in 10 years or so.

  3. Maybe Francis I can help the board and the musicians of the San Francisco Symphony reach a new deal.

I hope you don't have any tickets to upcoming SFSO concerts, from what I heard on KUSC today, it seems like this could be a bitter, protracted affair.

  4. I don't think this will last very long, and, well, I have a ticket for Saturday's planned Mahler 9.
