Lisa, I know Shakespeare's play is a shameless piece of slander cooked up by the Tudors to excuse their having usurped the throne. That said, have you ever seen the Olivier film version? I love it. The Ian McKellen has a lot to recommend it too, but the Olivier has (besides his campy Gloucester) John Gielgud delivering Clarence's speech that begins "Oh, what a dreadful thing it was to drown!@" and that's worth the price of admission right there.
Yes, Lisa, by all means check out Olivier's version. (John, you're right - totally campy!) The photography is great, too. McKellan is superb. I wish that someone could suggest to Patrick Stewart that perhaps he could film the role. His Sejanus in the old "I, Claudius" series was deliciously evil.

ReplyDeleteI saw McKellan's when it came out but have never seen the Olivier Richard III. Some day!

Yes, it was! And he'd be an excellent Richard III.
