Still working on the review, but Troyens was overwhelming and wonderful, greater than the sum of its parts. What a piece! What amazing scale! What spectacle! What a cast!
Yes, you could say I was happy with it. More after I file, which will be sometime tomorrow.
agreed
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed yourself.
ReplyDeleteShortest five-hour opera ever!
ReplyDeleteDear Lisa,
ReplyDeleteHi....happy you enjoyed the opera.
Can you recommend a recording that includes the ophicleide and saxhorns?
- regards, Greg from SF
Rob Gordon posted a more or less definitive discussion of Troyens recordings a couple of years ago, and thanks to him I can say that the only recording that includes them is the Gardiner DVD. :)
ReplyDeleteDammit, I was hoping you'd report it was terrible and why waste all that money and it's a dumb opera after all etc. because I'm poor and can't afford to attend. :-)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to see it to hopefully erase the memory of the crowd laughing at the ludicrous dance sequence at the one production I've seen in a theater (LA Opera).
Sorry!
ReplyDeleteCan you drive up? Can you stand through it? That's $15 or something.
There's a weekend performance on June 20.
I can't justify spending even the $200 it would take while I'm unemployed. I hate being a responsible adult! :-)
ReplyDeleteMark Swed was meh about it, it was probably incredible, hahahaha.
