    There goes your invitation to Chicago to review Jimmy Lopez's first opera.

    In other news, I finally finished The Shining. Loved the book but can't see how it can be adapted to opera without great skill and ruthless cuts (or "shaping"). Terry Quinn, librettist, says: "Invent from scratch, or re-imagine; never adapt." Helpful words for audiences to remember, too.

    Hahahaha re my invitation. My first Chicago trip will be on my own dime, for that widely-rumored Troyens.

    The Shining is a pretty terrifying book. What do you do with the role of the young boy? Have an amplified 10-year-old, or a small soprano?
