New York City Opera 2016-17 Season

Well, okay, I admit that I was more than skeptical about the revived / resurrected NYCO, but the 2016-17 season looks great:

  • Aleko, Rachmaninov / Pagliacci, Leoncavallo double bill
  • Fallujah, Tobin Stokes
  • Candide, Leonard Bernstein, dir. Hal Prince (!), some new lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (!!)
  • La campana sommersa, Respighi (The Sunken Bell)
  • Los Elementos, Antoni de Literes (part of the opera in Spanish series)
  • Angels in America,  Eötvös
They've also got a couple of performances of La Boheme and Die Fledermaus this summer.

Visit the company web site for complete information about the season.

  1. Interesting about the CANDIDE production being by Hal Prince. Wondering whether it's a question of performance rights previously granted to (the old) City Opera? I remember noticing that the NYCO revival of SWEENEY TODD, maybe 15 years ago, was in the original Broadway production.

I only attended one NYCO performance this season, HOPPER'S WIFE, an appealing if flawed show (http://classicalvoiceamerica.org/2016/05/02/hoppers-wife-sets-nyc-opera-2-0-on-promising-course/). They're definitely operating in a different niche than the old company--more small scrappy shoestring ensemble than large main stage company. CANDIDE could be a stretch.

  2. Good question about Candide - I suspect that any existing rights or contractual commitments would have been voided in the bankruptcy, but I am not a lawyer.

One of the small, scrappy, shoestring opera companies here mounted a brilliant production last of, unbelievably, Lulu, so with enough imagination, Candide might be possible.

  3. If I were in New York, even I would go to a couple of those. Candide in particular.

  4. Rumor is that SFO will do A Quiet Place sometime in the next couple of years, if Bernstein is part of the draw.

  5. Oooh, the Respighi is being done while I'll be there. I'll have to look into it when single tix go on sale. Thanks!

  6. I too was looking forward to the Respighi, I think that's a terrific opera. However, a look at where it's playing has me doubtful:

Where's the large orchestra required for this opera going to fit? Will it be piped in via a PA system? I don't see anything about a reduced orchestration or anything, so....I'm skeptical.

  7. A Quiet Place? Yes, I might go. I'll see if B. is interested. Last time we went to SFO was for The Ballad of Baby Doe.

  8. Henry, the NYCO site says that the Respighi will be in the Rose Hall Theater, not the Appel Room you linked to. (It's the Valentine's Day concert that will be in the Appel Room.) Take a look at the site again.

Pictures of the production are available if you Google the opera title + Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, the coproducer that staged it back in April. It looks gorgeous. I hope I can fit it in to my already busy schedule while I am there!

  10. You are welcome, Henry. BTW, I wrote to them about ticket sales. The Aleko/Pagliacci double bill is on sale now and the other shows go on sale Sept. 15th.
