Big News Coming on Wednesday
San Francisco Symphony will name their new music director on Wednesday. I know this because I was invited to the press conference. Look for tweets on Wednesday around 5:45 p.m. unless you're one of the lucky recipients of an embargoed press release.
UPDATE: Feel free to speculate in the comments! And bear in mind: I know nothing. I haven't heard one credible rumor and I'm surprised that the announcement is coming now rather than a few months down the road.
I was hoping you would have a strong leaning toward someone and clue us in! I'm so curious!
ReplyDeleteWow, I wasn't expecting an announcement this soon either. Thanks for giving us a couple days to speculate!
ReplyDeleteGiven the timing, I am thinking it is someone that the orchestra has had a long-term relationship with, and who has long been near the top of their succession planning. I also suspect it is someone who would can start in the 2020-2021 season. David Robertson and James Gaffigan seem to fit those criteria.
Possibly with the initials PH-C? This guess is probably wrong, though :) .
ReplyDeleteI think that Robertson, Gaffigan, and PH-C are all plausible candidates and that an orchestra would surely take into consideration, very strongly, the criteria Michael mentions.
ReplyDeleteI am personally hoping for Susanna Mälkki, although it's also true that if I were her, I might prefer my current relationship with the LA Phil to suffice, given how forward-looking they are.
Mälkki would be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'd love Mälkki! My husband and I really enjoyed her work with the orchestra.
ReplyDeleteShe's a great conductor.
ReplyDeleteWell, dang, we all got it wrong, it seems: it's Esa-Pekka Salonen. However, I found a random post on Twitter that indicated "prepare to be surprised". It occurred to me when I read it to link the coincidence of Salonen leaving London in a few years to that possibility, even though I can't prove that I thought that, of course.

ReplyDeleteWell that was a pleasant surprise!
