Ballot

The top of my ballot looked like this when I voted the other day.

I'm listening to Obama speak in Grant Park. What a moment!

My son is there - he lives two blocks away and wangled a ticket. He's a witness to history.

Hearing Obama speak after 8 years of You Know Who is like waking up from a bad dream.

I wish I could be excited, but as a politics junkie since 2000, I simply can't.

On a parochial level, Prop 8 is going to pass, so the dinosaurs won, but they'll be swept aside eventually, it just sucks I won't be around to witness that glorious event.

I never caught Obamamania--one of my core mottos is a Clash lyric:

London calling
Now don't look to us
Phony Beatlemania
Has bitten the dust

so, apart from the unreal sight of seeing a half-black man win the Presidency in this country of racists, he's a squishy centrist Democrat, with a strong Bible-thumping streak, who lost me when he started talking about working with the Republicans instead of driving them in to the sea for 8 million generations, not merely one.

He's inheriting a total clusterfuck of a cratered economy, expanding wars in Afghanistan (aka The Graveyard of Empires) and now Syria, the pains of an empire in decline (Hello England! Howya doin'!!), emboldended China and Russia and the constant threat of assassination.

He's not going to have a fillibuster-proof Senate, so it's going to be those utter scumbags Pelosi and Reid caving to the howler monkey's across the aisle like an old mine lest they have nasty things said about themselves on Fox News, the monied interests will work on him and his supporters and.....the whole shithouse will still go up in flames.

And worst of all? That mediocrity David Gockley will still be in charge at the San Francisco Opera for the foreseeable future. Lotfi come back, I take back all those mean things I said about you near the end of your tenure, honest!

And right on cue, that dickhead Harry Reid invites a good kicking:

Harry Reid: "This is a mandate to get along, to get something done in a bipartisan way. This is not a mandate for a political party or an ideology."

You stupid, stupid, stupid man. The majority of Republicans, especially red state ones, don't give a flying fuck about governing, they care about humiliating those who they view as Less Than. So while Harry Reid dreams his dreamy little dreams of reaching across the aisle to Get Things Done, his opponents are laughing their asses off at what a tool he is, how, like Wil E. Coyote, he keeps getting up to get his ass kicked again. Here the Democrats have a real opportunity to make the Republican brand so utterly toxic that no one but loons like Sarah Palin will want to be within 1,000 miles of it, but he's talking about a continuation of the last 30 years of Republicans running roughshod over "Like me, please like me! Ow, quit hitting me in the face, I just want to get along" Democrats.

The Democrats are Chrysothemis, desperately unwilling to see things as they really are, just hoping that *somehow* things will get better, though only a totally insane person would think that.

Well, peace does take a lot more courage than war.
