I'm Betting on Conlon

He knows the piece, his responsibilities at LA Opera end for the fall around Oct. 8, and he's conducting SFS the week before Luisi was scheduled.

You mean that you're betting that he'll be appointed to replace Luisi as guest conductor of the Verdi Requiem with SFS? You're being cryptic and I'm not entirely sure I'm following you.

Yes, I believe there's a pretty good chance that Conlon will conduct the Verdi Requiem at SFS. He did a great job with the piece the last time SFS performed it, he's available, etc.

Makes sense to me- and he was marvelous with it the last time. Still, I would have really liked to have Luisi on the podium for this one.

Well...and if you ask me, Conlon is a distinct possibility to fill Levine's shoes at the Met as well. Alex Ross today postulated that Luisi isn't likely to take the post without some might tempting offer considering his upcoming commitment to Zurich. And as much as everyone likes to speculate about somebody young(er), I wouldn't rule out Conlon a New Yorker with a long history of conducting just about everything at the house.

Just a thought

That'd be interesting. Conlon has experience running a big house (all those years in Paris!). But the Met can also carry on for a couple of years with Levine as a semi-active Music Director and Luisi as Principal Conductor. Also worth keeping in mind: Luisi moved his primary home to NYC earlier this year.

And.. Conlon's current contract with LAO ends in 2013 (as does Mr. Domingo's). Wouldn't that just work out particularly well after a couple years of coasting by the Met and about the time Luisi is supposed to be in Zurich most of the time.

This point has been picked up in some of the parterre comments about Luisi today as well.
