Coming to SFS?

When your music director is also a prominent composer, you keep an eye on his guest conducting engagements because he's been known to conduct his own music and works by other interesting, prominent composers. I've been scouring Esa-Pekka Salonen's conducting schedule, and I found him conducting, at other orchestras, various works that I'd love to hear in San Francisco. Here's a little list of what he'll be conducting in the near future or has conducted in the recent past that isn't known to be on SFS's schedule:
  • Salonen: Fog (US premiere of orchestral version)
  • Muhly: Shrink (concerto for violin and strings); Pekka Kuusisto, violin, co-curator.
  • Bjarnarson: Piano Concerto (world premiere, LA Phil commission)
  • Salonen: Karawane
  • Shaw: Entr’acte
  • Salonen: Gemini
  • Hillborg: Peacock Tales. Millennium version for saxophone and orchestra
  • Salonen: Organ Concerto, programmed in several countries during the 2022-23 season.
  • Dessner, Double Piano Concerto; performed at NSO, spotted on NY Phil and LA Phil schedules for 2023-24
  • Lara, concerto for double bass and flute, performed in the 2022-23 LA Phil season by esperanza spaulding and Claire Chase, both SFS collaborative partners
  • Salonen, Tiu, fanfare in honor of Frank Gehry, premiered at LA Phil, October, 2023
  • Hillborg: Liquid Marble
  • Hillborg: Kväll
  • Hillborg: Violin Concerto No. 2
  • Hillborg: The Breathing of the World
  • Hillborg: Sirens
  • Saariaho: Lumière et Pesanteur
Predicted and performed at SFS:
  • Lindberg, Third Piano Concerto. SFS co-commission. Spotted on NY Phil 2022-23 season, with Yuja Wang as piano soloist. On the SFS schedule in October, 2022.
  • Salonen: kínēma, for clarinet and strings. Spotted on NY Phil 2022-23 season; now scheduled for November, 2023.
