Time for a Letter to the Editor

The NY Times Magazine video feature "The Music They Made" is especially revealing this year. They've recognized one classical musician: Ravi Shankar, and you know he's there for his pop-music connections rather than his greatness as a performer of Indian classical music. Not only that, of the 29 individuals I count, five are women.

Just so we know who is important to the Times, it's male musicians, mostly in rock, pop, and blues.

Another reminder that an establishment organ like The Times is going to cover and recognize The Man's music, not ours.

I vividly remember a time when the Times wouldn't have paid very much attention to the pop/rock world. Not that they have ever loved Carter except as a human interest story....

I thought it odd to see not one classical music representative. But, then again, I think this was made specifically for pop music than for any other genre.

Could be, but if that is the case, the title of the video should be so qualified. Eric G., I put up only one of your two comments - they're nearly identical. If you don't see a comment appear immediately it's because I have the blog on moderation.
