Is It Too Late?

There's something truly operatic about watching a powerful public official tumble into the abyss, his promising career wrecked by a scandal.

But I've been wondering if 48 is too late to start a singing career, because Eliot Spitzer may shortly be in a position to make his Met debut singing soprano.

It's really too bad that "Eliot Spitzer" just doesn't work in Italian...

Intersting how, no matter what else a man in public life may do, sex is the one thing that can ruin him more quickly than anything else. We have a president who took us, with no plausible explanation, into a war in which 4,000 Americans have died, who condones torture and abrogates the constitution, and he stays in office while the hound dog must resign. Ah, GW has never never cheated on Laura, so in that sense the "administraion" is scandal free. The Whitewater investigation led nowhere, but Clinton had to be impeached over sex. I guess it's beause sex is basic. It's something everyone understands. Spitzer had to go, of course, but there are people left in office who are doing things that are much, much worse.

Yep. There are much, much bigger criminals in office, and no easy way to prosecute them. But damn Spitzer, for having the right political impulses and still walking right into this.
