Gospel According to the Other Mary Cast Change

Joana Carneiro was originally scheduled to conduct the John Adams oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary at San Francisco Symphony, but today's press release about the upcoming Adams 70th birthday concerts included the news that Grant Gershon will conduct the work.

If you're an Adams fan, you'll want to hear this. The audio I heard around when Mark Adamo's Mary opera played at SFO was fabulous.

I had not seen this! I'm sorry Carniero is not available, but I'm glad they've gotten someone who also has a lot of history with the work.

They've essentially brought together the entire cast from the 2013 performances in Los Angeles and the recording, with Jay Hunter Morris instead of Thomas and Gershon conducting all of the performances instead of just one of the three.

I am so excited for this.

I've been listening to the recording repeatedly for the last couple of months and have finally got a mental handle around it. Huge, sprawling, complex, and even though it's in many ways a sequel to "El Nino," complete with three countertenors, it feels like a step forward for Adams.
