SFS Personnel Changes, Yet Again

Between my last and most recent SFS concerts, Nicole Cash's name disappeared from the French horn roster in the program, and, indeed, there's now an audition listing on the orchestra's web site.

SIGH. She is a terrific player and I'm sorry to see her go.

Aw shit. Unsurprising but still dismaying. Great player, great person (from what I'd heard — I never met her) and also, which is not about her specifically but still: Her departure means the number of African-Americans on the SFS roster has reverted from 1 to 0. This is...not getting better.

Indeed.

I have not been able to figure out whether she landed a spot elsewhere. I do know that during the brief strike a few years back she posted comments on...Mark Rudio's blog? Mine? about the cost of living in SF versus Texas, where she had previously been in Dallas's horn section.

Hm, that's discouraging! Down the 5, the LA Phil's Resident Fellows program has brought in some excellent younger musicians of color. I'm hoping that the fabulous percussionist Wesley Sumpter becomes a permanent addition.
