San Francisco Symphony has a number of auditions coming up.
- Associate principal horn and assistant principal / utility horn. Two positions. This reflects the impact of hiring Diego Incertis Sánchez as principal horn: the principal should have input into hiring to fill the vacancies, because the principal will have a concept of how the horn section should sound and thus helps choose players who will create that sound.
- Associate principal bassoon. This position has been filled for the last year by former principal bassoon Stephen Paulson, so it appears he will be retiring from the orchestra after 48 years in that position.
- Section cello (multiple positions), perhaps reflecting retirements that haven't been announced yet.
- Section viola

not principal trombone, too? I thought with Higgins going to Chicago, they'd be hurrying to fill the chair? maybe I'm just confused
He's on leave this season. They can't hold auditions until/unless he resigns.
Right. Still, this on-leave-but-principal-in-another-band status confuses me….
Here are the possible outcomes of this situation:
* On leave from SFS, trial year at the CSO. He gets tenure at the CSO and can then resign from SFS and stay in the CSO, or decide he prefers San Francisco weather, so he goes back to SFS.
* On leave from SFS, doesn't get tenure at the CSO, goes back to SFS.
* Resigns from SFS, at the end of his trial year at the CSO he doesn't get tenure. Now he doesn't have a job at the CSO or SFS.
That's why he's on leave and his position at SFS can't be filled unless he resigns.
We await developments….
