And Stating the Obvious....

San Francisco Opera and LA Opera's 2013-14 seasons have no works composed by women. No women on the podium, either.

I'll be glad to be corrected, but wasn't the last piece by a woman at either company the ghastly Nicholas and Alexandra by Deborah Drattell? Yikes.

Jennifer Higdon is supposed to compose an opera based on the novel Cold Mountain for Santa Fe and Philadelphia, due to premiere in Santa Fe in 2015. Was that originally at SFO?

A nice bit of news re: *GASP* an actual female conductor! Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla is a Dudamel Fellow at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, she has a nice pedigree in Germany and Austria. The LAP program:

Dutilleux: The Shadows of Time
Mozart: Piano concerto #25 (with E. Ax)
Beethoven 5th

The concert was supposed to be conducted by Ludovic Morlot but he was very ill and only conducted Dutilleux's wonderful score. Ms. G-T conducted the Mozart and Beethoven and made a good impression apprently.

Considering how much I disliked Giandrea Noseda's conducting of the all-Rachmaninov program last week --no, Mr. Noseda, playing everything at lightning speed doesn't make it more exciting-- I was hoping that Mr. G-T was on the podium.

Actually, no: since Nicholas was staged, SFO has performed Rachel Portman's The Little Prince, which I did not see.

Yes, the Higdon commission started here. I gather they couldn't agree on money or the vehicle or something.

Hello,

Not related to women composers, but... I don't know if you've seen this: Marin Alsop on a talk at George Washington University School of Business.

Hi, Tomas - No, I haven't seen that, but I'll check it out when I have a chance. Thank you!
