Berkeley Symphony 2015-16

Berkeley Symphony has a great season coming up too. Their schedule includes about 33% new or recent music, continuing their long commitment to the music of our time. I am lazy and will copy/paste, but I am happy to see that the first program is on a Wednesday, though whether I want to attend concerts Monday and Wednesday that week and teach classes on Tuesday and Thursday remains to be seen. Pavel Haas Quartet or Berkeley Sympony: perhaps I have to flip a coin...or take a day off that week.

I'd like to hear the Gubaidulina program. Too bad it has to be in Zellerbach.

Looks like a great season.

Perhaps I'm simply being pedantic, but it bugs me when orchestras credit only Mussorgsky for Pictures. First of all, we're left to assume (probably correctly) that they are performing the Ravel orchestration and not any of the half-dozen or so others. Second, that orchestration (whichever it is) is a pretty darn important part of the work that the audience is going to hear, and the person that made it should be credited as prominently as Mussorgsky. I highly recommend a live recording Leonard Slatkin made with the St. Louis Symphony many years ago in which he intermingles various orchestrations into a single performance. Before it, he shows the opening Promenade in three or four versions.

Hi, Dave - Yeah, you are right. Should be Mussorgsky/Ravel or Mussorgsky/Shos or whatever. Thank you for the recommendation; sounds fascinating!
