Santa Fe Opera, 2018

Santa Fe Opera announced its 2018 season today:

  • Candide, Bernstein, new production (Laurent Pelly), company premiere. Bicket/Rae, Shrader, Burdette, Schneiderman, Ott, Troxell.
  • Madama Butterfly, Puccini, revival. Bignamini; Kaduce/Martinez, Gluekert/Guerrero, Marino, Pallesen
  • Doctor Atomic, Adams & Sellars, new production, company premiere. Aucoin/McKinney, Bullock, Bliss, Arwady, Okulich, Mix
  • The Italian Girl in Algiers, Rossini, revival. Rovaris/Mack, Swanson, Conner, Hendrix, Verm
  • Ariadne auf Naxos, R. Strauss, new production. Gaffigan/Echalaz, Sledge, Morley, Majeski, Gilfrey
Most exciting, to me, is the new production of Doctor Atomic. I hope it won't be a duplicate of the SF production. After that, Ariadne. Might see Butterfly as it has been ten years. Candide, maybe, but there will be a good semi-staged version at SFS next season.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Candide is worth it for Brenda Rae alone. I heard her for the first time a few months ago (Amenaide in Tancredi, Opera Philadelphia) and was bowled over. I wish Santa Fe was featuring her in a more interesting role, but she's on the verge of a major career.

Also, I'm really intrigued by Majeski as a soprano Komponist--especially since I'd wager Ariadne is a role she'll tackle in the future, too.

I'd LOVE to see Laurent Pelly's take on Candide. The SFS Candide in January is described as just a concert version, not semi-staged, but I'd like to be wrong - please let me know if I am. I think the Boris Godunov is their only semi-staged offering next season.

I love Brenda Rae too. She was very impressive in Santa Fe double-bill "The Impressario"/"Le Rossignol" in 2014 and in Seattle Opera's "Semele" in 2015. I would say that she IS already a major star, especially in Germany. Her schedule for the next couple of months includes Gilda, Zdenka and Amina in Frankfurt, and Zerbinetta and Aminta (from Die schweigsame Frau) in Bayerische Staatsoper. I think it's a pity she sings less in the US though. ;)

PS. I really want to see that Barrie Kosky's Die schweigsame Frau!
