I'm looking forward to hearing Kim conduct the Ring. In the past, I've liked Mulligan, Struckmann, Kutasi, Relyea, Adams, Schlicht, Bai, Krumm, and Raven. When I saw Wilson as Brünnhilde last year (in Paris), she sounded great, and was game for the staging.
Are you planning to see the Paris Opera Ring next month?
Alas, no. My summer travels (5 weeks, 16 performances) were my foreign travel for 2026. :) Also, I am reviewing Lincoln in the Bardo and Jenufa at the Met!
I liked Wilson a lot in Santa Fe last year and have liked most of those singers. Kutasi was kinda pitchy in Ballo but her Ortrud was memorably good.
I wish I liked O'Neill more. I seem to be an outlier in my reaction to his timbre. I wouldn't skip the cycle on one singer alone, but he wouldn't be my first choice.
I understand about the travel limitations. If only we could fly everywhere we want to be. Congrats on reviewing Lincoln in the Bardo and Jenufa at the Met. Wow!
I did want your thoughts on the Paris production. Maybe another time. Director is Bieito. I saw Walküre last year and did not like it. I did enjoy most of the singers (especially Wilson, van den Heever, Groissböck, de Barbeyrac) but thought the staging used tech more for show than to make any profound comment. There was so much of it (large screens of live video of action we could already see on stage, plus the Boston Dynamics robot dog), I found it a distraction and a barrier between me and the work.
I can understand your response to O'Neill. Be interesting to see how he sounds as Siegfried.
I thought SF would have EvdH - happy with Adams, though!
The first time I heard de Barbeyrac was in the Don Giovanni that Marc Minkowski conducted at SFO and I didn't like him much. Turns out...he's a very good singer but Ottavio is not his role. I liked him a lot in Der Freischütz.
That production does not sound good!
