Reactions to the Record, 2018

Reactions to the Record, Stanford's once-in-a-while symposium focussing on historical recordings and what can be learned about performance styles from them, is happening this year, April 6 to 8, 2018.

The papers and participants haven't been announced yet, but I can't sing the praises of this conference sufficiently. It's on the small side, maybe 100 participants; it's exceptionally collegial (though there have been a few...heated moments); amateurs are welcome along with working musicologists.

SFCV writer David Bratman and myself have both attended, though I've missed the last couple owing to conflicts. I am not sure whether and how much I can attend this year. In any event, registration is on this page.

The schedule is up. Since the concerts both conflict with Bard Music West's Cowell festival, and none of the papers I could make without conflict - which are mostly about digitizing rolls, not surprising since that's the big Stanford project these days - are of much interest to me, I'm just going to skip it this time.

I'm going to the annual jujitsu convention, which is in Sacramento after being pretty far away the last couple of years (not to mention...three weeks after my mom died in 2016). I'll be back in time for Seattle Symphony at Cal Performances, missing everything else. I'm VERY sorry to be missing Bard West. I saw one of their concerts last year and it was terrific.

Have the tickets in my hot little hand, whether I get to review it or not.
