Season Announcement Season: Seattle Opera

Seattle Opera was actually first out of the gate, a couple of weeks ago. Their 2012-13 season, with the vague theme of varieties of love, will be:
  • Turandot
  • Fidelio
  • La Cenerentola
  • La Boheme
  • Suor Angelica/La Voix Humaine
Lots of Puccini, with whom I guess opera companies feel they cannot go wrong; also, the summer of 2013 will include the last bring-up of the Wadsworth Ring, which of course is expensive. If I lived in Seattle, I'd be buying plane tickets instead of opera tickets....except for the Ring.

I love Puccini, truly I do, but seriously- three slots out of five/six? That's ridiculous and I'd go so far as to call it lazy. What an odd schedule!

At least the cast of the Boheme, as Axel Feldheim noted on the OT's blog, will be very attractive as well as good singers. I'd also take the opportunity to see Voix, since I never have, and it feels wrong to pass up any opportunity to see Fidelio, so I would see that too.

Finally, I've never seen Cenerentola, so ack- if I lived in Seattle I'd go see 4 out of the 5. Maybe that's what they're counting on?

Trying again -

It's easy to find singers who know Puccini and easy to sell tickets. Which they need to do with expensive Ring cycles coming up.

Yeah, that's an attractive Boheme cast. Seriously, no idea which one should pick if buying tickets.

Elizabeth Caballero has an incredible voice; she was sensational in her Merola appearances. But she dropped out of the Adler program, feeling she didn't need what it had to offer - and she was wrong.

I went to her Bay Area farewell recital, and the vocalism was beautiful but she did absolutely nothing interesting and gave no sense of having a clue about what the words meant. So it got extremely monotonous. Her career has not exactly taken off and I understand why. Once you're no longer being floored by the instrument, which is big and luscious with a ton of spin, there's not much there, or wasn't when she was here.

I've seen everything they are doing, though Voix was so long ago I don't remember it.
